Commercial Aviation Case Studies

Fortune 500 Commercial Aircraft Navigation Systems Manufacturer
Challenge:
Develop the first requirements specification incorporating GPS capability in business aircraft for the Cessna and Gulfstream corporations.
Solution:
Requirements were developed concurrently by systems engineering, software engineering, and software verification disciplines. Requirements traceability was inherent to this effort.
Result:
The results were very successful, tested well, and improved the company's position for more business for GPS and Flight Management Systems (FMS) applications by other manufacturers.
Fortune 500 Defense Contracting Company
Challenge:
Develop a qualification test program for an avionics package. The customer needed to validate the airworthiness and performance of an 800 lb avionics cabinet under realistic test conditions simulating the operating environment of the target aircraft. The customer had an aggressive schedule with severe penalties for failure to perform.
Solution:
Analyzed the performance and environmental requirements to determine the levels of testing needed and the necessary performance thresholds. An integrated schedule was developed to ensure hardware and software deliveries supported each stage of the testing process. Plans and procedures were provided for each airworthiness or performance test called out in the specification.
Result:
The qualification test program was a complete success. The client was able to deliver the avionics system on time to meet airborne testing requirements with minimal rework. Test-discrepancies were managed in-stride, and system performance met specifications.
